Ginseng is a native plant of Asian Countries such as China and Korea. The Asian form is known as the Panax Ginseng. There is also an American Ginseng grown in Brazil known as Panax Quinquefolium, these aren’t to be confused. The word “Panax” means “all heal” and refers to its therapeutic benefits to health. The plant thrives in well shaded and moist habitats, it requires dead leaf matter known “humus” as a nitrogen source for growth. The root is where the active ingredient Ginosenosides reside. In Chinese the roots are called “rénshēn”, “rén” meaning human and “shēn” meaning root, this is due to its distinctive shape that mirroring the limbs of a human.
The Asian form of Ginseng is one of the oldest known herbal medicines and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 7000 years. In China they refer to it as the “root of heaven”, as they believed it had the ability to cure every ailment.
The health claims of Ginseng include an improvement on mental and physical performance within the body. It also benefits the use of sugar utilization and increases lactic acid breakdown to extend endurance performances. In addition, it's thought to improve cognitive function and concentration by releasing Ginsenosides which induces energy and has a calming effect in stressful situations.
