Green tea comes from the same family as Black, White and Oolong tea. The tea is harvested off the Camellia Sinesis Plant and has been used in traditional medicine by Chinese people for many thousands of years. The word “sinesis” roughly translates as “from China”, where its believed to have been sourced and cultivated from. Although, there is evidence to suggest the origin of this tea could be not only from China but Vietnam, India and Thailand too. It's a shrub-like plant that is best grown in tropical climates and dense woodland, with a strong source of light and moist soils.
Camellia Sinesis’ use in brewed tea is evidenced as far back as the T’ang Dynasty and in Buddhist monasteries, in 650 AD. In today’s society, we use green tea as a natural source of caffeine.
The active ingredient of Green tea is called Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), which can only be found in the green form of the tea. The primary health benefit of green tea is its antioxidising abilities. An antioxidant scavenges and collects free radicals which prevents them from causing disease and illness. In addition, Green tea can increase the resting metabolic rate and thermogenesis of body, thus expending more calories.
