Both Selenium and Zinc are trace elements that when used in conjunction with one another can be hugely beneficial to the body’s natural defences and immune system. In addition, they are both known to aid healthy fertility.
Zinc (Zn) is a trace element, that is found in almost all cells of the human body, and a vital co-factor component of many enzymes. Zinc is only found in the body due to its consumption in foods, we are unable to make it. Zinc is found in foods such as red meat, seafood, organ meats, wholegrains and eggs. It’s recommended that males consume 11-14mg/day, and women around 8mg/day. It has been shown that average intake from food is approximately 15mg, from an omnivorous diet. However, the range that supplements provide can be anywhere between 10-70mg. Our tablet contains 43.9mg of Zinc Citrate, which will provide 15mg of bio-available Zinc. The health benefits of Zinc are that it contributes to DNA synthesis and metabolism, whilst acting as an antioxidant and preventing damage to DNA, lipids and proteins. In addition, Zinc contributes to maintenance of normal hair, skin and nails, and maintenance of the metabolism of carbohydrates. However, the two primary reasons Zinc is taken is to strengthen the immune system and contribute to fertility by aiding a healthy serum testosterone level in the blood.
Selenium (Se) is another trace element. When it was first detected in the 1930s it was classified as a toxic compound, little did they know that it is such an essential nutrient. It was only in 1973 that the function of Gpx (glutathione peroxidase) became apparent. Gpx enzymes are dependent on Selenium for their structure. Selenium is found in foods such as red meat, fish, milk, eggs and mushrooms, but Brazil nuts are the richest source. It’s essential for a person to consume Selenium, but too much can have adverse effects, including brittle thinning hair, crumbling teeth, reduced fertility, fatigue and garlic breath. It’s recommended to take 50-200mcg of Selenium a day, but a healthy body only really needs 90-120mcg. Supplements can provide from 200-800mcg of selenium, however we recommended you do not take more than 400mcg per day, this tablet provides 200mcg. The benefits of Selenium are its contribution to healthy thyroid function, and promotion of an effective immune system, whilst acting as an antioxidant. In addition, Selenium has been shown to maintain the health of normal hair, nails, joints and blood vasculature. Moreover, it helps in the production of sperm (spermatogeneis) and act beneficially to the health of the prostate.
This tablet comes in a small 6mm size which is very easy to swallow.
